Welcome to the Montgomery College Speech Processing Research Center
The Speech Processing Research Center has been designed to enable students who are interested gaining experience in speech processing research as undergraduates in developing their research intellects and enhancing their communication skills.
Speech processing is the analysis and synthesis of speech signals for productive purposes. The field of speech processing has been a significant branch of signal processing for almost half a century, and lends its applications to several aspects of our every day life such as automated communication systems, voice or name recognition in cell phones and other devices, speech verification for security purposes (in laptops, safes, e.t.c.), automatic language translation, speech-to-text and text-to-speech systems on computers and GPS devices, only to name a few. Speech processing is also utilized in broader settings, such as for homeland security, broadcast/conference data archiving, foreign relations, and medical devices.
Some renowned private U.S. companies significantly involved in speech processing include IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Google, Ford, and several telecommunications companies. The field in invaluable to the US defense system, hence the consistent partnership formed between governmental agencies and defense labs, such as the Air Force Research Laboratories, and several universities to carry out research and develop state-of-the-art systems.
Members of the speech lab will be involved in interesting and challenging projects which will boost their problem solving skills and expose them to the world of state-of-the-art signal processing. At the end of each semester, all members will work in pairs on a research topic, write a report, and prepare and oral PowerPoint presentation for the entire department.
